Considering sound masking, but worried it will just add another annoying noise.
Okay, so my company is looking at sound masking for our open office (ugh, I hate it already). But I'm genuinely worried that it's just going to replace the noise of conversations with another, equally irritating noise. Like, will it be the equivalent of trading the sound of someone crunching chips for the constant hum of a server room? Any experiences, good or bad, would be appreciated! I really need to focus to produce good quality work.

I understand your concern about adding another annoying sound. But the idea with office sound masking systems isn't to introduce a distracting noise. When correctly installed, it's supposed to be a very subtle, almost unnoticeable background sound that helps to cover up the frequencies of speech, making conversations less intelligible, and therefore, less distracting. You should research open office soundproofing solutions carefully.
